Woodwose
Handmade stoneware sculpture of a crouching woodwose on all fours, wearing an oak crown. The figurine has been glazed with oxides and is covered in textures created by individually carved linocut stamps.
According to the OED, the Woodwose is a wild man of the woods; a savage; a satyr, a faun; the representation of such a being, as a decoration or as a heraldic bearing or supporter. The term is recorded from late Old English, and the first element wood means ‘mad’.
A woodwose/wodewose is a mythical figure and motif that appears in the art and literature of medieval Europe, comparable to Silvanus, the Roman god of the woodlands.
