Inspired by badges found at Haddon Hall in Derbyshire, these stoneware ceramic badges with oxide glaze are around 3cm with a pin on the reverse.
This Pilgrim symbol is a Badge of Our Lady of Walsingham in the form of an Ampulla. The original was made from cast lead circa 14th Century.
Found in Twyfords Cottage Garden in 1926.
(See Brit. Archaeological, Vol.XIX, 1863) These pilgrim badges were the first type of souvenir borne from tourism in the Middle Ages.
Each pin badge comes in its own padded jewel box.
